William MarkhamOf Counsel
William Markham, a graduate of Harvard Law School (J.D., 1987), is a trial lawyer in California who has more than twenty-five years of experience. He also has significant experience bringing and opposing appeals in federal and California court. He principally devotes himself to three practice areas: (1) antitrust matters (for which he provides both litigation and counseling); (2) trademark infringement matters, securities fraud and other kinds of complex business litigation; and (3) complex real estate matters. He has prevailed for his clients time and again, obtaining jury verdicts and bench verdicts for them. He has also developed an excellent understanding of which cases he can present at trial and which ones are best to settle before trial.
Mr. Markham recently served as the U.S. antitrust advisor to the world’s largest manufacturer of LED panels.
Mr. Markham began his legal practice at Coudert Brothers, an international law firm (since dissolved) that represented sovereign governments, Fortune 500 and 100 companies, universities, and other prominent clients.
He founded his own practice in 1990 and over time became an accomplished trial lawyer. He is widely published (click here) and has been interviewed and quoted by The New York Times, CNN, NBC-San Diego, Univision, and other media. In fact, The New York Times characterized him as an expert in foreclosure law.
Mr. Markham has also served as an adjunct professor at both Hastings Law School (legal advocacy and legal writing) and at Lincoln Law School (constitutional law). He has also been a featured lecturer on antitrust law and foreclosure law in classes taught to California attorneys (MCLE classes).
Mr. Markham supports Bona Law PC’s international capabilities with his proficient language skills. He is completely fluent in French, which he speaks like a native French speaker, and he is also genuinely fluent in Spanish. Mr. Markham’s language skills allow him to communicate with clients and others in English, French, and Spanish and help him to remain abreast of new developments in antitrust and competition law in the European Union, Canada, and Mexico. These skills are an asset to Bona Law PC’s relationship with international attorneys around the world.
Mr. Markham is an award-winning attorney and has been recognized by many publications, including by Super Lawyers Magazine in 2013 and again in 2014. In the annual poll of San Diego attorneys conducted by The San Diego Daily Transcript, he has repeatedly been a semi-finalist for “best business litigator” (2006, 2007, 2011 and 2012) and also for “best real estate litigator” (2010). He also has been recognized as one of San Diego’s “best real estate attorneys” in San Diego Metro Magazine (2011 and 2012).
In addition, he has served on the LRIS Committee of the San Diego County Bar Association, which sets attorney referral standards and provides the general public with referrals to qualified attorneys who practice law in San Diego County. He has also served as a judge in the Moot Court Honors Competition of San Diego University Law School.
Mr. Markham served as an editor and later as an associate editor of The Harvard International Law Journal while attending Harvard Law School.
He is admitted to practice law in California, Washington, D.C., and is a member of the following organizations: The French-American Chamber of Commerce (San Diego County), the California Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, and the Bar Association of San Diego County.
